The Space Distortion Shell, or SDS, is a bubble of carefully manipulated space-time created by an Alpha Drive, and is a controlled expression of the space distortion effect generated by Alpha Matter. The shell envelopes a pocket of normal space containing a traveling vessel, whereupon the shell compresses spacetime in front of the vessel and extends spacetime behind it, propelling the vessel through space at faster-than-light speeds.
